Question by beaelzabud: I found an old dusty leather bag of old bills dated back to the 1940′s…should I turn them in?
The house I was working on has been vacant for several years. My wife and I got it cheap and started doing repairs to it….I was working in the old garage and tore open the wall and low and behold an old dusty bag completly filled with stacks and stacks of new $ 50 dollar bills all dated 1943. Should I turn them in?

I would assume that since it was in your walls that you purchased they would be considered yours.

When you buy a house or car you own all the contents at the time of sale. You are in the green, LITERALLY!

Are you brain dead? Sure, turn them in – into the bank! Jeez…better yet, just email me and I’ll come and get them.

Turn them in? To whom? Do you own the house.? If so the bills are yours to keep. If someone else owns the house, the bills belong to the owner.

It’s your house? If so…
I would keep them, who would turn them into anyway?
Those bills are now worth more than $ 50.00 a piece you know. I would not spend them I would take them to a currency dealer
WAIT A MINUTE..I remember you, you had some question about walking in on your girlfriend having sex with her brother…now you have a wife of several years in this question.
You have a credibility issue

They are counterfeit. If you have seen any movie leather bags equal mobs. Mobs equal nice clothing and organized crime. Being organized means you stack money nicely. 50 dollar bills are nice and large, but just small ought to counterfeit and get them flowing through places without much fuss. COUNTERFEIT!

You bought the house.
Everything in it belongs to you.
Whoever put it there gave it up when they moved out.
It’s yours, free and clear, so enjoy!
just wondering

I would assume anything in the house conveyed with the house, so legally the money is yours. If you feel guilty about that, you could try to research who owned the house in the past and track down the owners or the heirs. However, I don’t think you are under any legal obligation to do so. Even if the money was stolen, I imagine the statute of limitations on the crime is long over. If you keep the money, you might want to investigate whether it has historical value above the face value.
I hope for your sake that Ryan C is wrong with his counterfeit theory! Better have them checked out!

Since you bought the place, they are yours.
Now, if the are as new as you say, don’t tell anyone how many you have and sell them to numismatic collectors. Probably get a lot more than face value for them unless they find out you have a thousand of them.

I’ve seen a case like this before. If I remember correctly because the money was in the house (outbuildings) when you purchased the house, the find legally belongs to you. You bought the house, the garage and everything contained therein.
It would be interesting to google your area for crimes in that time frame.
I don’t think I would turn it in, who would claim it 60 years later?

So, you have a wife and a girlfriend? I think you should give a thousand to your girlfiend to get some therapy, cause if she’s having sex with her brother, she needs it. And give the rest to you’re wife, she’s goint to get it in the end when she divorces your ass for cheating on her anyway!
